                              ------------------

Before installing any Software or Hardware in a system, you must disable any
Antivirus programs: NORTON etc. The application may not install correctly if
antivirus programs are running while you attempt to install a new component
or program in a system. This is to avoid any system problems you may
experience later on.

Also make sure you have done all of the Windows Updates for your Windows
Operating System using the Windows Update feature.

CD-ROM - Windows can't find files on installation CD
              ----------------------------------------------------

Some of you may encounter this error during the install process:

"The file 'xxxxxxxx.xxx' on Turtle Beach Driver Installation Disk
    could not be found."

If you get a message similar to this one, please follow these instructions:

1. First, you need to know the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive.
Double-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop and you will
see that one of your disk drives appears with a Compact Disc icon.
   This is your CD-ROM drive.

                  [image/]inst1.gif[/image]

In the illustration above, the CD-ROM drive is assigned to drive letter E:,
but it can be almost any other letter up to Z:.

2. If the soundcard's installation CD is already in your CD-ROM drive, the
CD-ROM icon in My Computer will look something like the picture below:

                               [image/]inst2.gif[/image]

3. Now that you know the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive, reboot Windows to
   restart the installation process.

4. After the Add New Hardware Wizard detects the new hardware, it will ask for
the location of the drivers. If it does not automatically find the
soundcard's drivers on the CD-ROM, the wizard may need to Browse to the
location of the drivers. Point the wizard to the CD-ROM drive as shown in
the illustration below. You can simply type in the "path" to the CD-ROM as
shown (E:\ in this case), or click on the Browse button to navigate to the
   CD-ROM drive.

              [image/]inst4.gif[/image]

5. Your CD-ROM drive will now appear with a Compact Disc icon in the Drives:
field, as shown in the example below:

[image/]inst3.gif[/image]

6. Press the OK button when the missing file appears highlighted in the large
box under File name: (the file a3d.dll is shown in the illustration above).

7. The Windows Add New Hardware Wizard should be able to find the rest of the
   files from there.

NOTE:
Some installation programs will ask for the Windows CD-ROM at some point.
This will cause the Add New Hardware Wizard to lose track of where to find
its files.

1. For Windows 98, you will need to type in or select the E:\WIN98 folder.

2. After the Add New Hardware Wizard is finished copying files from the
Windows CD it will prompt for the soundcard installation CD.
Once again it will have lost track of where the files are.
Simply type in or select the E:\ folder. The Add New Hardware Wizard
should find the file it is looking for and be able to proceed normally
   from there.

Error: "The file CWB3DSND.EXE on Malibu Driver disk could not be found" (Win 95
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1) When prompted for the Mailbu Surround 64 CD, browse to your CD-ROM drive.

2) If the error message "The file CWB3DSND.EXE on Malibu Driver disk could
not be found," is displayed, type D:\ in the Copy Files dialog box.

Note: If your CD-ROM is a drive letter other then D, put that letter in
         its place.

Error: "Windows was unable to locate a driver for this device."
        ---------------------------------------------------------------

Occasionally Windows 95 OSR2, a.k.a. Rev. 95b, has trouble detecting the
"malibu.inf" file.

Although the file is in the root directory on the CD-ROM, and shows up in
the browser dialog box, Windows may report the following error message:
"Windows was unable to locate a driver for this device."

If this is the case:

* Hit [ESC] several times to return to the Windows desktop

* Copy the "malibu.inf" file to a temporary directory on to your hard
  drive.

  To copy the file:

  1. From Windows Explorer, click on the CD-ROM drive, then click the
     "malibu.inf" file.

  2. From the Edit menu, click Copy.

  3. Open the folder where you want to put the copy.

  4. From the Edit menu, click Paste.

* Restart Windows.

* When Windows prompts for the manufacturers drivers, point the browser
  to this location.

* After Windows finds the "malibu.inf", continue the installation normally
  from your CD-ROM

Joystick - where are the Joystick Port drivers?
                -----------------------------------------------

When the "New Hardware Found" dialog window is displayed and Windows has
detected the Joystick Port, it will install drivers for it. These drivers
are on your Windows 95 CD, not the Malibu applications CD.

MIDI - how to enable external MIDI In (Win3.1/95)
               -------------------------------------------------

To enable external MIDI In, an IRQ must be set for the TBS Malibu
Wavetable (MPU-401):

Windows 95
----------
1) Open Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager
-> Sound, Video and Game Controllers.
2) Double-click on the TBS Malibu Wavetable Synth (MPU-401) and click on
   the Resources tab.
3) Click on the box labelled "Basic Configuration" and change it from 0000
to 0002. You'll now see that an Interrupt Request is listed.
4) External MIDI IN should now work.

Also, from the Windows mixer, please make sure that under "Playback" the
"Synth" module is NOT Muted. If it is Muted, it not only disables the internal
Wavetable Synth but also cuts the communication with an external Midi source.
This is because the same driver handles the internal Wavetable Synth and the
MIDI In, MIDI Out communication.

Windows 3.1
-----------
1) From DOS, run "cs32cfg.exe".
2) Select the Music tab and make sure that the IRQ is set to a value such
   as 9.
3) Click [OK] and the new settings will be saved.
4) Restart the computer to activate the changes.

MIDI - how to enable the Wavetable and external MIDI In under NT 4.0
      --------------------------------------------------------------------

1) Install the Malibu.

2) Install the Low-level Wave, MIDI and AUX support.
   a) Open Control Panel -> Multimedia
   b) Click the Devices tab
   c) Click [Add]
   d) From the list, select Low-level Wave, MIDI and AUX support
   e) Click [OK]
   f) Your Windows NT CD may be needed to install the driver.

The system is now enabled to play MIDI. However, it's only FM at this
point. To enable the Wavetable and get external MIDI in, add an MPU-401.

3) Install the MPU-401-compatible driver
   a) Open Control Panel -> Multimedia
   b) Click the Devices tab
   c) Click [Add]
   d) From the list, select MPU-401-compatible Driver
   e) Click [OK]
   f) Your Windows NT CD may be needed to install the driver.

Now, you'll have the ability to select the Wavetable by choosing
Generic MPU-401 in your software application. For external MIDI In,
select the same port.

4) Confirm that the settings for these two devices match:
   a) MIDI for CrystalWare Audio Driver
   b) MIDI for MPU-401-Compatible Driver
   c) In particular, the IRQ and Port addresses must be the same.
To view or change the settings:
      1) Open Control Panel -> Multimedia -> Devices
      2) Double-click on MIDI Devices
      3) Double-click on MIDI for CrystalWare Audio Driver
      4) Click [Settings]
      5) Click the MPU-401 tab and note what the IRQ and Port Address
         settings are.
      6) Close these two windows
      7) Double-click on the MIDI for MPU-401-Compatible Driver
      8) Click [Settings] and make sure the resource settings match.
(For example, if the first device was set at IRQ 9 and address 330,
click the radio buttons to select the same values.)

NT 4.0 - Malibu is detected on boot up ("PnP ISA Services" installed.)
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

If "PnP ISA Services" are installed in NT 4.0, they will present problems
while installing the Malibu (the OS will insist on detecting the sound card
and prompt for drivers which cannot be installed properly once the card is
detected). This can be corrected by uninstalling the PnP ISA Services and
installing the Malibu from "Add New Hardware" manually:

1) Click Control Panel -> Multimedia -> Devices.
2) Click "Add".
3) From the list of drivers, select: "Unlisted or Updated Driver".
4) Click [OK].
5) Click [Browse].
6) Browse to the CD-ROM drive with the Malibu CD, and then to the NT folder,
where the NT drivers are located.
7) Follow the directions on-screen.

                            NT 4.0 Install help file
                            ------------------------

The sound card includes an online help file which walks you through an NT
install:

1) In the Applications CD, run "apps\setup.exe".

2) If the drivers aren't installed, a dialog box appears asking whether you
want to run the troubleshooter. Click [Yes].

                           Product ID - Registration
                           -------------------------

The following applies to the Retail Product only, for the original owner and
not for OEM, Second Hand, eBay, Auction, Clearance Markdown, Flea Market,
Garage / Yard Sales, etc.
                                    ***

Your own *unique* Product ID is important and will be required in order to:
    * Install the software
    * Receive Technical Support
    * Issue an RMA for defective Hardware
    * Qualify for Updates, Upgrades and Specials when offered to Registered
      users

Your Product ID / Serial Number is located on a yellow sticker inside the
jewel case of your Applications CD-ROM. It is NOT located on the board itself,
so there is no need to remove it from the computer in order to look for
numbers.

We strongly recommend that you Register your product to protect your
investment and enable us to retrieve your own *unique* Product ID number
should you ever lose it. New Product IDs cannot be generated so please keep
it in a safe place for future reference.

NOTE: If you do not have a Product ID / Serial Number, as is the case in the
OEM or Bulk versions, you may still use the Hardware by Downloading
the Drivers posted on our FTP:
      http://www.turtlebeach.com/site/support/ftp.asp

                                Resource Usage
                                --------------

* 1 IRQ (2 if using external MIDI)
* Several I/O address ranges
* 2 DMAs
* One I/O address to use joystick port

                              System Requirements
                              -------------------

* IBM(R) PC or compatible computer running Windows(R) 3.1, 95, NT 4.0 or
  higher

Uninstalling a Windows program - User Error
                  -------------------------------------------

Our Tech Support staff receives a good number of requests for help from users
who inadvertently have deleted files that are associated with Windows
programs, in an attempt to either Uninstall a program or thinking that they
do not need them.

This is a NO! NO! Please do NOT ever remove any files associated with any
Windows program. Instead, always use the Windows "Add/Remove Programs"
Wizard or a program's Install Shield that usually offers these options:

        Modify, Repair, Remove

Do NOT delete folders or files that belong to a program, as this will render
this program's Uninstall useless, generating errors like:

        "No installation found" etc.

In cases like this, you are 'stuck' and often times there is no remedy other
than manipulating your System's Registry on your own and **at your own risk**
or you may need to reformat the hard drive where the Windows OS is installed.

VTB bears no responsibility for "user errors" and has absolutely no
obligation to restore your system to a working condition.

                              Windows 2000 Install
                              --------------------

Windows 2000 is a Business Operating System not designed for consumer use.
Moreover unlike Win NT, Win 2000 is based on a new Driver Modeling
architecture.

While most of our 'older' Software and Hardware will work in this Operating
System, support for these products is limited to the known workarounds posted
on our website.
____________________________________________________________________________

11. Change value to an IRQ (5,7,9,or 11) that will not conflict with any
      other devices in the system.

- The Wavestream software synthesizer will not install, as the program
requires that Win 9x be installed.

- The SRS Surround feature will not install, as it requires that Win 9x
  be installed.

- The RCA Digital S/PDIF Out will not function.

- The Microsoft Soft Synth does install but there is a MIDI delay.

    devices in the system.

- The Wavestream software synthesizer will not install, as the program
requires that Win 9x be installed.

- The SRS Surround feature is a built in part of the WDM Crystal drivers.
The controls for this (Center and Space) must be enabled in the Windows
Volume Control. To do this, click Start - > Run and type in sndvol32 and
click OK. Now click Options - > Properties.

 [image/]cmxr1.gif[/image]

On the "Show the following volume controls:" list, SRS Center and SRS Space
need to be checked.

 [image/]cmxr2.gif[/image]

Click OK and the Volume controls look like this:

 [image/]cmxr3.gif[/image]

- Since the several of the volume levels are set very low by default,
they should be raised for adequate volume:

 [image/]cmxr4.gif[/image]

- The Microsoft Soft Synth installs by default but there is a MIDI delay.
In order to use the Malibu's internal wavetable synth, the Crystal MPU-401
needs to be set as the MIDI out device. To do this, click:
Start - > Settings - > Control Panel and double-click on Sounds and
Multimedia. Click on the Audio Tab.

- Under "MIDI Music Playback", change the "Microsoft GS Wavetable SW synth"

IRQ 9 causes ISA sound card not to work
                    ---------------------------------------

Many people are finding that if they assign the MIDI component of their older
sound cards to IRQ 9 that the MIDI no longer works. The same may hold true for
any other component of the sound card.

The APM (Advanced Power Management) and ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power
Interface) functions of a typical Pentium, Pentium II or Pentium III computer
must use IRQ 9 to work properly. This will conflict with the MPU-401
compatible interface or other components of your ISA sound card.

If you wish to use IRQ 9 for your ISA sound card, it is recommended that you
disable all Power Management functions in the BIOS or CMOS Setup Utility for
your motherboard.

Here is what Intel has to say about this:

"IRQ9 is not available to assign to ISA add-in cards because it is dedicated
to the power management function of the PIIX4E controller on the motherboard.
This is true for other motherboards which use the 82371AB PIIX4E component."

                              Speakers positioning
                              --------------------

Depending on your room acoustics and the design of your speakers, you may need
to experiment in order to achieve the best effect.

GENERAL TIPS:
Make certain that there is nothing blocking any speaker that may muffle
the sound.

Position all the speakers at the same level; in other words, don't put one
on the floor and another on a bookshelf. This will cause a lopsided stereo
'image'.

Position speakers so that the tweeters (small speakers that reproduce higher
frequencies) are at ear level. This does not apply to subwoofers, because
low frequencies propagate in a fairly omni-directional manner, so placement
is not nearly as critical as with mid and/or high frequency speakers.

TWO SPEAKERS:
For computer audio, the best place to position a pair of speakers is on either
side of the display screen. You might want to try placing the speakers at ear
level, toed in at an angle so that they are pointing towards your ears for
best effect. Both speakers should be the same distance from your head, and
positioned at the same level relative to each other. If the speakers are to
be placed within a foot of your computer monitor, you will need to use
shielded speakers that won't damage the picture tube or distort the image
on your screen.

   [image/]2spkrs.gif[/image]

TWO SPEAKERS WITH SUBWOOFER:
Position the satellites and subwoofer so that a monaural signal sounds most
like it is coming from a single speaker positioned at dead center.

Connections - How do I connect my guitar amp directly to my sound card?
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS UNLESS YOUR GUITAR AMP HAS A LINE-LEVEL OUTPUT.
If it does, then you may connect the Line Out from the Amp to the sound
card's Line In. The same holds true for connecting the amp's Preamp Out,
or Effects Loop Send - do not connect them unless they are line-level.
NEVER connect the amp's Speaker Out to the sound card.

AVOID CONNECTING 'PREAMP OUT' OR 'EFFECTS SEND' DIRECTLY TO SOUND CARD.
A guitar amp has a lot of gain - it is designed to operate at high volumes
with large amounts of distortion. Therefore, the Preamp Out and Effects
Send from a guitar amp have a LOT more gain than a typical "line-level"
audio device. A sound card is designed for more delicate signals.
By connecting a guitar amp's outputs you run the risk of overloading
and frying the sound card.

NEVER CONNECT 'SPEAKER OUT' DIRECTLY TO SOUND CARD.
Connecting the Speaker Out to the sound card's Line In will *FRY* the sound
card! This is because speakers require high voltage from a guitar amp -
much too much for the delicate circuitry of a sound card.

USE A MIXER.
The best way to record the guitar on a PC is by using a mixer.
Connect the Preamp Out or Effects Send from the guitar amp to a mixing
board line-level input, and then take the line output from the mixer to
the sound card's Line In. Keep the volume controls low when you first
hook this up, then s l o w l y turn up the volume controls to get a good
level.

TURN VOLUMES DOWN WHILE CONNECTING/DISCONNECTING CABLES.
DO NOT connect or disconnect patch cables with the volume controls
turned up - this can cause a damaging transient noise. Just turn all
the volumes down when you connect/disconnect any cables.

Mic level setting in "Dragon Naturally Speaking"
                ------------------------------------------------

The calibration utility included with "Dragon Naturally Speaking" presents
the following peculiarity: when testing the microphone's level, the utility
automatically raises the volume control in the Mixer to the maximum level,
boosting the level out of its usable range. This causes the utility to report
that the microphone and sound card failed the test, even though everything is
working properly.

To remedy this situation:

1) Open the sound card's Mixer and verify that the microphone input is
active. Test this by recording your voice to your computer (you can use
AudioView or Windows Sound Recorder). Keep the Mixer open on the desktop.

2) Open Dragon Naturally Speaking, and run its calibration utility. Keep both
this and the Mixer visible on the desktop.

3) When the Dragon calibration utility turns the microphone volume all the way
up to 100%, switch to the Mixer and with the mouse click, drag and hold
the microphone level down to about 75%, and proceed with the test (you
will need to hold the mic level down during the entire test).

4) If the test fails, try again. This time, keep the microphone volume at
   50%, or less if necessary.

5) When you've found a good microphone setting, close the Mixer. This will
   save the setting.

NOTE: You may also visit Dragon's Web site at: www.dragonsys.com

                          Mics - types of microphones
                          ---------------------------

1) DYNAMIC microphones are quite simple. The air pressure changes produced by
speaking into the microphone move a membrane which is attached to a tiny
copper wire coil, which is suspended over a permanent magnet. The coil
moving back and forth over the magnet produces a small voltage, which is
the audio signal. No external power or batteries are required.

2) ELECTRET CONDENSER microphones work by placing a small metal diaphragm
close to an electrically-charged plate. When you speak into the
microphone, the metal diaphragm moves back and forth within the electrical
field of this charged plate. A tiny signal then appears at the output of
the microphone. This tiny signal needs to be further amplified in order
to work with a standard microphone input. Both the microphone itself and
the pre-amplifier need power sources. These can be provided by a battery
or by another external power source.

3) UNIDIRECTIONAL, or "CARDIOID" microphones only pick up sound from in front,
while rejecting sounds from the back and sides. The microphone is then
said to have a "cardioid" polar pattern. The pattern is heart shaped
(hence the name - cardiod). Point a cardioid microphone at your mouth and
it "ignores" any sounds coming from behind the Mic. This makes it possible
to sing into it without picking up much from monitors or an audience.

4) OMNIDIRECTIONAL microphones pick up sounds equally from all directions.
Such microphones are good at picking up multiple sound sources and room
ambience. Omnidirectional microphones are undesirable for use with
voice recognition packages, as environmental noise will "confuse" the
   software.

CONDENSER vs. DYNAMIC:
The condenser mic converts sound waves into an audio signal via a condenser
(which must be electrically powered). A dynamic mic does the same thing with
a mechanical diaphragm (no power needed). Dynamic mics can take more abuse,
but the condenser mic will give a better sound. Use a dynamic for live music
or recording heavy stuff (distorted guitars). Use a condenser for recording
voice or instruments such as acoustic guitar, piano, etc.

______________________________________________________________________________

                      Mics and voice recognition software
                      -----------------------------------

When used with voice recognition software, it is crucial for the microphone
to pick up only the speaker's voice and reject unwanted noises from the
surrounding environment. A microphone with a UNIDIRECTIONAL or CARDIOID
polar pattern is ideal for this, as it will only pick up sound from in front,
while rejecting sounds from the back and sides.

OMNIDIRECTIONAL microphones perform poorly for voice recognition, as they pick
up sounds equally from all directions. Environmental noise is picked up which
"confuses" the software.

Either a DYNAMIC or CONDENSER microphone can be used for voice recognition,
so long as it is Unidirectional or Cardioid. (A Condenser microphone will
need a battery or a power pack to work with most sound cards.)

The microphone that Dragon supplies with Naturally Speaking is a Cardioid
Condenser microphone.

To learn more about the different types of microphones on the market, see the
article "Mics - types of microphones".

Unzipping files - how to unzip/extract files
                  --------------------------------------------

Windows XP comes with a built in unzipping program. Winzip is not need for XP.
Just double-click on the .ZIP file and then hit Extract All.

WINZIP Step by Step:
--------------------
1) Download Winzip (Evaluation version) from its website at www.winzip.com,
   and install it.

2) Double-click on the downloaded .ZIP file that you want to extract.

3) Agree (or disagree) to Winzip's disclaimer and you will see the contents of
the zip file. You will need to agree with the license agreement before you
are able to use the program.

4) Press the "Extract" button and you will see a screen with an "Extract to"
window in the upper left. Type "C:\Install" in this window (no quotes).
This will be the location of the new drivers that you are unzipping the
file to. Also, make sure that the dot is on 'All files' not 'Selected
   files'.

5) Press "Extract"

6) The extraction is complete when the green light is back on in the bottom of
the screen (this will take a second or so).

7) You may now navigate to "C:\Install" in My Computer or Windows Explorer
where you can see the newly unzipped contents of the file. Continue with
your installation procedure as outlined in your manual, or in the
README.TXT file in the .ZIP file.
